The Blue Lady of Palmetto Dunes is a well-known ghost story from Hilton Head, centered around a tragic event.
Everyone knows about the red and white striped Harbour Town Lighthouse. But the Island is home to another smaller, once-functioning one. The Hilton Head Island Rear Range Lighthouse is also known as the Leamington Lighthouse. It is situated in the Leamington neighborhood of Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and the Arthur Hills Golf Course. Constructed between 1879 and 1880, it served as a navigation system. For many years, it safely guided ships through the winding waterways of our area to Port Royal Sound.

Here’s where our ghost story starts.
Caroline Fripp lived with her father, Adam Fripp, who was the dedicated Lighthouse keeper in the late 1800s. During a devastating hurricane in 1898, Adam suffered a heart attack while trying to keep the lighthouse flame lit. Caroline, obeying his dying wish, continued his work throughout the night.
Grief-stricken, Caroline was often seen pacing between the cottage and the Lighthouse in the days following her father’s death, always wearing the blue dress she had on that fateful night. Accounts of her life after the storm vary. Some say she died shortly after, while others claim she lived a long life continuing her father’s duties.
In the 1960s, the Lighthouse and keeper’s cottage fell into disrepair, and materials were repurposed for construction in Harbour Town. This disruption allegedly led to sightings of Caroline’s ghost. The first reported sighting involved a couple who saw a ghostly figure in a blue dress near the Lighthouse during a storm. To this day, sightings of the Blue Lady of Palmetto Dunes continue whenever stormy weather looms. Locals report seeing the spectral figure of a woman in a blue dress near the Lighthouse. Some even claim to have heard her haunting cries as she searches for her father.
The story of the Blue Lady has become a popular legend among locals and tourists alike.
There are quite a few people who seek the chance to hear and experience the ghostly presence first-hand. Some believe that Caroline’s spirit still lingers near the Lighthouse, unable to rest until she finds peace or is reunited with her father. Others see it as a cautionary tale of the dangers of not heeding weather warnings.
Visiting the Arthur Hills Golf Course and seeing the Lighthouse where Caroline and her father once lived is a must for anyone interested in experiencing the Blue Lady’s presence. And while sightings may be rare, knowing the story behind her ghostly appearance adds an extra layer of intrigue and mystery to this already picturesque location. No matter what your beliefs are, one thing is for sure – this ghostly legend will continue to captivate visitors for years to come.
