This year marks our 10-year anniversary of hosting Juneteenth at the park and there is an entire week full of events to enjoy.
Tuesday, June 11, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.: Naycha and B’uhds: Birdwatching Experience

Join “Naycha and B’uhds” to explore Hilton Head Island’s avian populations, as Hilton Head Audubon presents a serene birdwatching experience.
Learn from expert naturalists about local and migratory birds, their role in the ecosystem, and spotting techniques. Enjoy education and relaxation at the lush park – whether you’re a seasoned birder or new, find joy in observing various species.
Instructions: Bring your binoculars, wear comfortable footwear, a chair, and water. This event is free. Please register for a 30-minute arrival time slot. Location: Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, 40 Harriet Tubman Way. Please park at Cherry Hill School at the corner of Dillon and Beach City Rd.
Wednesday, June 12, 5-6:30 p.m.: Juneteenth Opening Reception
The Juneteenth at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park opens in style with a reception at Ruby Lee’s. This event kicks off a series of celebrations honoring freedom and cultural heritage on Hilton Head Island.
RSVP for complimentary admission to enjoy a welcome cocktail and refreshments at the reception. For those craving a full dinner experience, make reservations at Ruby Lee’s by calling (843) 715-2122. Connect with community members, leaders, and enthusiasts, as we gather to honor the significance of Juneteenth.

Thursday, June 13, 6 p.m.-6 a.m.: Juneteenth Celebration Sleepover with Joe McGill & Friends
Joe McGill of The Slave Dwelling Project hosts a profound overnight experience at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park. Reflect on history, freedom, and the stories of formerly enslaved individuals across America.
The event kicks off with a traditional Gullah dinner and local craft vendors, leading to a night under the stars in the park. Camping gear will be provided for the first 10 registered groups, but participants are encouraged to bring personal comfort items like sleeping bags or chairs.
While staying overnight is recommended for full immersion, it’s optional. Security will be on-site, and park bathrooms will be open all night for convenience.

Friday, June 14, 5:30 – 7 p.m.: Juneteenth Drum Circle
Join a powerful communal drumming experience led by skilled drummers and a liberation ceremony by Yoruba priests. Feel the unity and collective memory as drums echo through the park. Connect with the community through a traditional African Drum Circle. Enjoy music, fellowship, local vendors, and food trucks on-site.
Admission is free but RSVP to secure instruments and space.

2024 Juneteenth Celebration
Get your groove on with Quiana Parler’s disco-infused, soulful tunes, leading up to the sensational performance by the iconic S.O.S. Band. Dance to hits like “Take Your Time (Do It Right)” and “Just Be Good to Me” in true disco fashion.
For just $10, immerse yourself in this unforgettable event celebrating Historic Mitchelville’s legacy. Enjoy delectable dishes from local vendors against the scenic backdrop of the park. Remember your lawn chairs, best disco attire, and stay refreshed throughout this day of music, history, and unity in honor of Juneteenth!
