Nestled in Harbour Town lies the esteemed “Liberty Oak”.
This majestic 360+-year-old live oak is a tree with a legacy. Under its grandiose boughs, Hilton Head developer and conservationist Charles Fraser is laid to rest. Today, a plaque dedicated to Charles Fraser, and a bust of his image lie under the shade of the Liberty Oak, memorializing this Hilton Head visionary.
In contrast, the melodies of legendary singer-songwriter Greg Russell have danced through its branches for three decades and counting, enchanting visitors time and time again. This titan of a live oak is close to 55 feet tall, 90 feet across and estimated to weigh 38 tons. It is thought to be planted by Native Americans who resided in the area over three centuries ago. The Liberty Oak is part of the Sea Pines Community Services Associates’ preservation program. The program maintains the tree’s maintenance and pruning.
Throughout the year, the Sea Pines Resort hosts many activities for kids of all ages.
These include:
- Movie and marshmallow roasting
- Holiday kiddie train rides
- The Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the adjacent Gregg Russel Playground
- Painting Classes
- Halloween games and trick-or-treating
- Harbour Town Fall Fest
- Holiday Lights
- Live music events
- July 4th parade
- Holiday fireworks dispalys
- and, of course, Gregg Russel!
The Liberty Oak serves as a natural shaded canopy. With the glistening waters of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and the iconic Harbour Town Lighthouse behind it, it is a superb spot for ceremonies. Many weddings take place here every year. With amphitheater-styled benches, the venue seats up to 200 guests.
