What do I need to get married on the beach?
In order to get married on the beach, you will need to obtain a marriage license from the state of South Carolina.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Both parties must appear together and in person to apply for a marriage license.
- $80.00 filing fee for application (CASH ONLY, NON-REFUNDABLE). This fee must be paid before the application will be taken.
- South Carolina statute requires a twenty-four (24) hour waiting period after applying before the marriage license may be issued. The license cannot and will not be issued less than twenty-four (24) hours from the time of application. After the waiting period has expired, either party may return to pick up the license.
You will also need to find a officiant who is willing to perform the ceremony on the beach. Some local beach wedding officiants are:
- Nancy’s Nuptial’s
- Say “I Do!”
- Hilton Head Weddings
Wedding ceremonies performed on the beach require a permit (free of charge) from the Town of Hilton Head Island.
To apply, please complete the request form and submit online at least 30 days prior to your ceremony date. If you have more questions about permits, please contact the Town of Hilton Head Island Facilities Management at (843) 342-4580.
- Information Required for Application:
- Location of Ceremony
- The “Location Details” of the ceremony must be known prior to the request submission.
- Date
- Time
- Duration
- Number of Expected guests
- A Daytime Telephone Number
Additionally, it is important to have a backup plan in case of bad weather. You may want to consider renting a beach house or resort for your wedding party, as this will give you a place to stay and get ready on the big day.
What should I wear for my beach wedding?
For beach weddings, it is important to dress appropriately for the weather and environment. The bride should wear a light-weight dress that will not blow away in the wind. The groom should also wear clothing that is comfortable and appropriate for the beach. It is also important to consider your footwear, as you will likely be walking in sand. Wedding guests should dress similarly to what they would wear to any other outdoor summer event.
