Sea Pines is a private resort located at the very tip of Hilton Head, just around the corner from Coligny Beach. Along with other amenities and attractions, Sea Pines has its very own forest preserve encompassing 605 acres of wetlands, ponds, lakes, and forests.
History
The preserve was first started back in 1959 by the founders and developers of Sea Pines, but the history of the land goes back more than 4,000 years ago when nomadic Native Americans first inhabited the area. A portion of their ruins can still be seen here today! Since then, the area was used for growing crops like rice, indigo and cotton. The first trails through the preserve were constructed in the 1970’s, but more have been added since then.
Trails
Today the forest preserve is a prime location for nature lovers. With multiple boardwalks, bike paths, and hiking trails, there is something for everyone to see. Foot trails and bike paths stretch all throughout the wetlands and forests along with observation decks that give you a panoramic view of the preserve’s natural wonder.
There are multiple areas for picnics and views of one of the preserve’s three lakes, complete with grills, water, and restrooms. The lakes – Joe, Thomas and Mary – are open to fishing and very scenic for photographers. Everyone can explore the plants and animals of the Lowcountry on the trails of the preserve. Lawton Stables even provides tours of the preserve on horses.
Activities
There are guided activities for the whole family as well. The Wildlife Boat Tours give you a firsthand account of the diverse habitats and wildlife of the preserve’s lakes. There are also fishing and wagon tours that offer a variety of unique experiences. The bridle paths that snake through the preserve are best traveled on horseback. You can see all that the preserve has to offer at a leisurely pace and be fully immersed in the natural beauty of the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.
