When the warm weather of March starts to roll around the in shore fishing starts to pick up, the days are getting longer the nights shorter and the fish now know that spring is on its way. As the water temperature slowly starts to warm up from the longer days, the fish seem to wake up and start eating more often now which makes it easer to catch them. This March is going to be very interesting with so much bait still in the creeks.

For the past 4 years the cold winters have pushed all the bait out of the creeks to migrate to warmer water. Not this year, so we will have to see what is to come for the in-shore fishing this March. The bite in March is hard to say what will happen and how good it will because it’s so different from last year.

One thing that I do know that gets me excited every year is the fishing in Palmetto Dunes lagoon system in March. The black drum starts to spawn and the redfish goes into a fake spawn thinking its fall with the water temps and longer days. One more fish that starts up in March are the speckled trout that live in the lagoon system. The first fish we will start seeing in great number are the black drum sunning on the surface of water in big schools during the middle of the day. By afternoon they have one thing on there mind this is spawning, so the late morning or middle of the day is going to be the best time to try and catch them. Fresh shrimp is the best bait for this fishing. We have great number of this fish in the system cause it takes only three year for a black drum to mature and spawn and some black drum have lived as long as sixty years. After the black drum bite starts up so does the red drum bite in the lagoon system.

As I said early the red drum will go into a fake spawn because the red drum only spawns in the fall. But this fake spawn will gather the fish up in great number like the black drum. You can find this fish in great numbers sunning together in spring in the middle of the day. Early to late morning is going to be your best chance to catch one of these big fish. Most of the time in early spring we use 4 inch menhaden ‘live’ to catch them if not menhaden finger mullet same size. Now my favorite fish of all time to catch in March though summer is the gator trout. The gator trout is my addiction in life when it comes to catching fish.

The lagoon system in Palmetto Dunes Resort holds some of the biggest trout on the east coast and in great numbers also. Catching big trout in the lagoon system is all about throwing top water baits that you can walk the dog with. Walking the dog is when a top water bait will move from side to side by twitching the bait as you reel it in. these big trout in early march are still a little sluggish to bite but by the end of the month on into the first of April its on for the rest of summer.
