05/01/2008

The summer season kicks into high gear with countless educational, cultural and fun family activities sure to keep all ages entertained from sunup to sundown. Here are just a few ways to make the most of your time in the Lowcountry.

In addition to ongoing history tours, educational exhibits and nature excursions, the Coastal Discovery Museum also hosts various summer programs. Sign the kids up for the Nature Discovery Day Camp on Tuesdays beginning June 17, learn more about endangered loggerhead sea turtles on daytime and evening Turtle Talks and Walks, Get to Know a Gator every Thursday starting June 12 or see Lowcountry wildlife close-up on June 11 and 25 during the Animals of the Lowcountry program. For details and reservations, call (843) 689-6767 ext. 223 or visit coastaldiscovery.org.

Spend a day out on the water and learn how to kayak, schedule a deep-sea or inshore fishing excursion, explore neighboring islands, rent wave runners or powerboats, go tubing or fly high in the sky on a parasailing adventure. Many local outdoor recreation companies offer seasonal kids-only camps, as well as assorted family outings.

Performing a unique blend of ‘60s standards, sing-a-longs, original ballads and children’s favorites, crowd-pleaser Shannon Tanner is back at the Shelter Cove Harbour Gazebo. Kids are always welcome onstage for singing and dancing during his weeknight shows and don’t forget to ask about Tanner’s Wonderful, Wacky Wizzle Cruise on Friday mornings. HarbourFest 2008  returns with a bang on June 3 with food, family fun and fireworks lighting up the sky over Shelter Cove Harbour Tuesday evenings through August 19. Admission is free and open to the public. (843) 785-9087 or sheltercovehiltonhead.com.

Audience participation is expected during these free concerts taking place every night except Saturday through August 22. The Sea Pines Resort also offers an array of family activities, including craft classes, scavenger hunts and eco-tours. Call (843) 842-1979 or visit seapines.com for details and reservations.
